Inst A v Ards Cricket Club Under 13 XI and Banogue Cup on Mon 20 Jun 2011 at 6.15pm
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 16 runs

Match report The U13's travelled up to Shaw's Bridge in Belfast to play section favourites, Instonians A in this league fixture. Despite the absence of some regulars away on Taverner's duties, Instonians still fielded a strong line-up including Ards' 'old boys' Stewart McCaughan and twins Paul and Andy Kerr. Instonians A batted first and got off to a brisk start with McCaughan, now an NCU squad member, scoring freely and especially severe on any short deliveries. However, Conor Balfour, who bowled a tight opening spell, made the early breakthrough clean bowling Cochrane (4) with a very good away swinger. Paul Kerr joined McCaughan and both batsmen played very well accumulating runs all around the wicket as Instonians reached 50 at the halfway point of the innings. The Instonians coach mindful of a heavy fixture list awaiting his team decided to retire both batsmen (McCaughan 23no and P Kerr 26no) to give others some time at the wicket. Ards soon capitalised with Francis picking up the wicket of Palmer (8) and Curry bowling Kean (6). As is often the case at this age group, the introduction of spin led to more wickets and Warren Martin picked up 4 wickets - O'Donnell (6), Creighton (9 - including a massive 6), Irvine (1) and Walsh (0). Adam Lawther bowling for the U13's for the first time completed 2 accurate overs picking up 2 more wickets - Andy Kerr (4) and R Walsh (2). The Instonians innings closed on 102 after the allotted 20 overs. Ards generally performed well in the field with Curry and Dougan in particular taking good catches.

The Ards innings began slowly as tight bowling from McCaughan and Paul Kerr limited the Martin brothers' scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, as the boys tried to increase the run rate, the 'run out' curse struck again as Ross Martin called for a risky single and brother Warren just failed to make his ground to be dismissed for 1. Despite this early setback, Ards played themselves back in to the game through an excellent partnership between Ross Martin and Adam Curry. As they reached 50 still with only 1 wicket down, the Instonians team were showing visible signs of tension. Combining good placement with some powerful hitting, Martin and Curry took the score into the 70's when Curry was eventually bowled by a good delivery from O'Donnell for an excellent 35 including 6 boundaries. Unfortunately, the frailty of the Ards' middle order was again exposed as Balfour (2), Francis (0) and Lyons (3) were all dismissed cheaply. Any chances of an 'upset' sadly evaporated when Martin was dismissed for a very well-made 29 after (yes you've guessed it!) another run out. After Lawther (0) was dismissed stumped, the Ards innings closed on 86 with McLawrence 4no leaving Ards 16 runs short of the Instonians total. Irvine was Instonians' most successful bowler taking 3 wickets for only 2 runs although McCaughan, Paul Kerr and O'Donnell also bowled well.

Despite this loss, Ards can take a lot of positives from their performance in this game. Special mention must go to Adam Curry and Ross Martin for their excellent batting performances. In what was a very enjoyable game played in excellent spirit, thanks must also go to Instonians for their sporting approach to the game and we wish them well in the rest of the league and cup campaign.
