Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Dungannon on Sun 10 Jul 2011 at 12.00pm
Ards Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report After a disappointing defeat at Donaghadee the previous weekend, Ards hosted title contenders Dungannon who were fresh from victory over Clogher the previous day. Ards won the toss and to the surprise of the Dungannon skipper, elected to bowl. Tom Donnan and Gareth Rodgers opened the bowling and got off to a dream start with key batsman Chris Adrain top edging a Donnan short pitched delivery to the safe hands of Tim Carson at square leg. Jeff Meeke and Michael McNamee then steadied the ship and took the score past 50 without any further wickets falling. However, Donnan was unlucky not to find the edge of the bat a number of times.

David McCullough replaced Rodgers and began to build pressure on the batsmen with Meeke dismissed lbw playing across the line. The pressure was kept up at the other end by left arm spinner Tim Carson, in his debut for the 1st XI. From his first over Carson had the batsmen in trouble and was soon rewarded with the wicket of the established McNamee. The middle and lower order had no answer to the spinning ball as Carson supported by D McCullough sparked a collapse from 96-3 to 103 all out. Carson collected a hat-trick as McFarland, Mens and Farrell all departed without scoring. This was an excellent performance in the field by Ards with good catches from Paul Cox and Garry Stewart. Tim Carson finished with 7 overs, 3 maidens, 5 wickets for 7 runs and David McCullough 8.4 overs, 2 maidens, 4 wickets for 25 runs.

It should have been a formality for Ards to chase down this total but another poor batting performance was to follow. The top order of Donnan, J Keenan and Stewart were dismissed for single figure scores either side of a rain delay. Sam Ingham looked the most comfortable at the crease and led the team towards the reduced target of 83 from 40 overs. Paul Cox was unlucky to be given out lbw after the ball hit the inside edge but six batsmen fell to catches. Wickets fell all too regularly but runs kept coming with 28 wides in total bowled with Dungannon missing several first choice bowlers. Gareth Rodgers ensured that the team got over the line with 2 wickets remaining and a move to second in the league behind Cregagh.

This was a good win for Ards and only the second victory over a team with recent experience in a higher league in the last 6 seasons. Tim Carson was the man of the match for a magnificent spell of bowling. His hat-trick also secures an Ulster Bank award, a remarkable performance in his first match at this level.
