Ards Cricket Club Under 15 XI and Graham Cup team v Ballymena on Fri 05 Jul 2013 at 6.30
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 2 runs

Match report A depleted U15's side took on Ballymena in their 3rd league fixture of the 2013 campaign at a sunny Londonderry Park. Ballymena won the toss and chose to bat. Ards opened with Grimshaw and Khan hoping that the Ballymena openers, both NCU U13 squad members, would bat cautiously at the start of their innings but too many loose deliveries allowed them to get off to a flying start scoring at over 10 runs an over. Skipper Ross Martin came into the attack, immediately stopped the flow of runs and bowled McClean (37). However, runs continued to flow at the other end as Ballymena piled up the runs in particular capitalising on the short boundary towards the canal. Martin, who was bowling with pace and accuracy, struck again removing Archer (7) with Conor Balfour taking a good diving catch inches off the ground to complete an excellent spell of 2 for 2 off his 4 overs. With the powerful Rea (60no) hitting the ball to all parts of the ground the Ballymena total concluded on 154 for the loss of 3 wickets after the allotted 20 overs.

The Ards reply began well with Ross Martin and Conor Balfour batting positively but when the score had reached 26, Balfour (10) was bowled by a good inswinging yorker from Scott. Martin, who was batting superbly despatching loose deliveries to and over the boundary at will, was joined at the crease by Lyons who tried to give Martin as much of the strike as possible. With the total on 72, off spinner Glass bowled Lyons (5) and Graham (0) with his next delivery but Martin's one man mission continued unabated and he soon brought up his fifty which included four 6's and 3 4's as the Ballymena bowlers struggled to bowl a consistent line and length. With Ifaz Khan batting sensibly at one end the Ards total reached 100 and an unlikely victory suddenly seemed a possibility. As Martin continued his onslaught Ards needed 20 runs of the last 3 overs. Khan (12) was eventually dismissed going for the big shot but despite a great effort Ards agonisingly fell 2 runs short of what would have been an incredible victory. Martin with a fantastic innings of 88 not out, including eight 6's and five 4's, didn't deserve to finish on the losing side but again illustrated his considerable talent which has seen him called up the the 1st XI after several excellent performances for the 2nd XI.

The Under 15's next fixture is at home to the strong Instonians side.
