Clogher v Ards Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 04 Aug 2007 at
Ards Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Ards returned to winning ways on Saturday with a convincing victory at Clogher. Comfortably the longest distance that the local side has travelled for a league fixture in many a year, it was apparent on arrival that the weather has been even less kind to the western side of the country.

Very much the archetypal setting for village cricket, the damp outfield and soft wicket were at odds with the picturesque surrounds, although Clogher must be given credit for even getting a pitch prepared at all. The home side won the toss and opted to bat, and it soon became evident that with such a slow pitch, fielders behind the wicket would be a token gesture. That said, Ards captain Richard McFeeters misjudged a sharp chance at slip that would have given Brian Maxwell an early breakthrough. Gareth Rodgers bowled as consistently as ever but the lack of pace meant a lack of penetration.

Sensing a change of pace was required, McFeeters brought himself on in only the 9th over, a decision that paid immediate dividends. He bowled McFarland for 20, and as so often happens in this game, one wicket brought two, with Rodgers bowling Coalter for a duck.

The rest of the innings followed the same pattern, as useful partnerships were punctuated by a brace of wickets. With batsmen 8 and 10 being among the home side’s most impressive, it was almost as if they were unsure as their proper batting order.

The one constant was the pace and variety of Ryan Patterson, who displayed maturity beyond his years on a wicket which offered him little assistance. Ryan took his first ‘five-for’ for the firsts, claiming 5 for 19 from his 9 overs. With Paul Cox claiming his maiden scalp for the team, Clogher were all out for 126 in 44 overs.

With Neil Anderson on holiday, Stephen Scott’s opening partner was young Paul Mawhinney. With a remit to anchor the innings while others were more aggressive around him, Paul did a superb job of nullifying the Clogher attack, making 20 and seeing off fiery spells from the opening bowlers. Combined with the more flamboyant drives of Scott and Darren Hetherington, Ards laid the platform for a comfortable chase.

Having already survived a couple of sharp chances, Stephen drove to extra cover for 28, while Darren played some imperious shots in an unbeaten 40. A highly entertaining cameo of 15 not out from Peter Thompson saw Ards cross the finishing line with 15 overs to spare.

A better all-round performance than the previous week, Ards will need to find another gear still against Donaghadee at Londonderry Park this Saturday.
