Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Donaghadee on Sat 25 Jun 2016 at 1.00
Ards Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report It was essential, after last week’s loss to Monaghan, for Ards CC to get back to winning ways against local derby rivals Donaghadee, which they duly did in a comprehensive 6 wicket victory in their Ulster Bank Section 3 league match last Saturday at Londonderry Park. With the Londonderry Park pitch drying after rain the previous two days Owen Roberts won the toss to put the Dee in to bat.

Missing two bowlers, including skipper Conor Sims, Ards needed a good start which Peter Devlin duly delivered, bowling the Dee skipper Martin for 8 with 9 on the board. The next wicket took the Dee up to 51 in the 12th over as the familiar failings of straining too hard for breakthroughs delivered a number of 4 balls and wides. However, it was the introduction of Garry Stewart to the attack, in the 12th over, which precipitated an astonishing Dee collapse. In the space of 16 overs the Dee lost 8 wickets for 39 runs, with Stewart taking a remarkable 4-15 off his seven overs, and two unnecessary run-outs adding to the Dee’s woes. After a nightmare start Matt Hulbert finished with 2-20 off his seven overs and Devlin returned 2-16, snaring the last wicket to rout the Dee for 90 in the 28th over.

Adam Balfour and Paul Nihell, returning to the top of the order, opened the Ards innings with the pair adding 39 for the first wicket in quick time. Nihell in particular was severe on anything off-line, driving through the covers, picking up off his pads and pulling anything short. His brutal 59 included seven boundaries and three massive sixes, one of which hit the top of the catch fence on the Portaferry Road side of the ground. By the time Nihell was dismissed the score had reached 85 and, though Garry Stewart fell two runs later caught on the square leg boundary, Owen Roberts and Matt Hulbert saw Ards safely over the line in only the 17th over to record a 6 wickets victory.

This was a first win over the Dee since 2014 and a welcome return to form which pushed Ards up to joint second place in the league standings. The second half of the league campaign begins this coming weekend with a visit to Newforge and Ards will be seeking a win to strengthen their challenge for promotion. This match was sponsored by Alan Espey Interiors with the ball supported by S. D. Kells.
