Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Millpark on Sat 23 Apr 2016 at 1.00
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report On Saturday 23rd April, Ards CC played host to the league winners of last season, Millpark, for a pre-season friendly. Both clubs had some players missing but the game was a good workout for the two sides and gave some new players the opportunity to show what they could do. Millpark won the toss and asked Ards to bat. Captain Conor Sims and Adam Balfour opened for Ards against an accurate and tight Millpark attack. Sims was finding it the easier to time the ball but, after an increasingly fluent 28, he was trapped in front by Neil Reilly with the score at 45. Young Jack Smith was promoted to 3 in the order to give him some extra responsibility and he responded with an aggressive 17, as Ards reached 74 for 2 off 21 overs. Three further wickets fell cheaply before Ards reached 100, as Balfour (21), Nihell (3) and Niblock (0) headed back to the pavilion. That Ards got as far as 142, batting all their 40 overs, was in no small part due to the efforts of Conn Crawford (27) and young Harry Jackson (12) who despatched some loose bowling regularly to the boundary whilst other players fell around them. The final total was perhaps twenty short on the slow astro wicket, but it gave the Ards bowling attack something to bowl to.

In reply, Millpark lost the dangerous Glover (5) at 16, leaving Paul McCart and Jason Maxwell to rebuild the innings. This they did successfully before Sims had Maxwell caught for 12, with the score at 47 in the 11th over. McCart and Casey began putting away some loose bowling as they took their stand to 40 before Casey (19) was caught off debutant Timothy King and McCart retired. Talbot (32) and Stu McCart (8) carried on the quick scoring as Millpark chased down the Ards total in the 27th over for the loss of six wickets. For Ards, two late wickets by Conor Balfour (2-25) restored some gloss to his figures, whilst Peter Devlin was unlucky for his 1-24 off seven overs. Sims and King both took a wicket but the other bowlers struggled to control the ball and exert any pressure on the Millpark batsmen.

This was a reasonable workout for both sides as they gear up for the new season, with Millpark in Section 2 and Ards looking to challenge for the Section 3 title. Both sides were not at their strongest, and there was much to improve on, not least both sides’ propensity to bowl wides. However, plenty of batsmen had an innings against competitive bowling, though Millpark will be the happier as the League season approaches this coming Saturday. The game was played in an excellent spirit as past encounters between these two sides have been historically. We wish Millpark well for the new season and thank them for making the journey to Londonderry Park.
