Downpatrick v Ards Cricket Club Under 13 XI and Banogue Cup on Mon 17 Jul 2017 at 6.00
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 15 runs

Match report Ards won the toss on a beautiful warm and sunny evening at the picturesque Strangford Road venue and put opponents Downpatrick in to bat. Wright and B Mitchell began fairly cautiously as Ards opening bowlers Noah Greenauld and Alex Miller bowled decent opening spells. Miller made the breakthrough bowling Wright (4) as Downpatrick's total reached 17 off the first 4 overs. But an excellent partnership between Mitchell and the powerful Pooler put Downpatrick in the ascendancy as the Ards' bowlers struggled for consistency. However Euan Burrows bowled Pooler (21) and shortly after had Connolly caught as Ards struck back. Joel Craig and Charlie Fields also picked up the wickets of Culbert (1) and McBride (8) before Dominic Allen dismissed Dynes (0) caught & bowled and Alex Miller picked up his 2nd and 3rd wickets having S Mitchell (11) caught and trapping McNeilly (0) lbw as the Downpatrick innings closed on 110 with the highlight a fine innings of 42 retired by B Mitchell. While Ards fielders took some fine catches the ground fielding was generally poor and probably resulted in at least 10/15 extra runs to the Downpatrick total which was to eventually prove costly.

On a fast outfield Ards were still hopeful of chasing this score down and openers Miller and Allen started solidly in the face of some accurate bowling from Pooler and Wright. But as Ards looked to up the run rate Miller (15) was caught & bowled by Dynes and Allen (7) followed soon after as the run rate steadily increased to approaching 8 an over. A few hefty blows by in-form batsman Noah Greenauld provided some momentum to the Ards innings but his partner Ditty (0) and Joel Craig (4) were caught as Downpatrick's grip on the game tightened. Greenauld continued to try to up the tempo and found a valuable ally in Curtis Ewing who made 9 before being run out going for a risky 2nd run. Despite Greenauld's (38no) valiant efforts he and Rory McVeigh (1 no) were unable to get Ards across the line and Ards' innings closed on 95 for 6 after the allotted 20 overs. So unfortunately another narrow defeat for the Ards boys but once again a number of positive performances especially by Greenauld who was well supported by Alex Miller and Curtis Ewing.

While the Ards catching was mostly of a high standard, the ground fielding was generally poor and probably made the difference between winning and losing this match so with more practice and dedication at practice hopefully progress can be made in this key aspect of the game.
