About Ards CC
Ards currently has two senior teams playing in the Northern Cricket Union - the 1st XI in the Senior League Section 3 and the 2nd XI in Junior 6. 1st XI matches are normally 40 overs and 2nd XI a maximum of 35. Matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays and players may play on either or both days depending on selection. There are also, from time to time, T20 matches. The season lasts from the last week in April until mid-September. Senior practices are held on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.30-8.30pm at Londonderry Park. Individual coaching is available by arrangement with the coaches in the brand new net facility.
There are currently four Junior teams: the under 11, under 13 and under 15 levels play in the Northern Cricket Union leagues and cup competitions, and an U17 team plays in the Colts Cup only. Their games are mainly played in the evenings between May and August amd are normally T20 format. Practice sessions are held on Tuesday evening for the U15s from 6.45-8.30pm and Wednesday evening 6.45-8.30pm for U11 and U13, all at Londonderry Park. All boys and girls are welcome, irrespective of ability, and beginners to cricket will be assisted in learning the game.
During the off-season, indoor practice sessions are held in the Ards Leisure Centre during March and April. Details of these sessions, and general club news, are published on the Club's website www.ards.hitscricket.com and in the Newtownards Chronicle Cricket News section.
Ards CC now have, courtesy of the Council's investment in Londonderry Park:
- a new 9 pitch clay-based square which has already produced some excellent pitches with pace and bounce.
- two astro pitches on either end of the square for practice and match play.
- a huge catch fence on the Portaferry Road side of the ground.
- a new equipment store and scoring building.
- two 30m nets which are completely enclosed and safe.
With such excellent facilities at Ards' disposal let's make sure that they are used each night of the week.
