Donaghadee v Ards Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 07 Jun 2009 at 1pm
Ards Cricket Club Won

Match report After losing the toss Ards were asked to bat by Donaghadee on a slightly soft wicket at the Dee. Ards openers Neil Anderson and Johnny Keenan got off to a steady start but with the score at 16 Keenan lost his wicket for 10 to P McNamara. This brought Gary Stewart to the crease and together they progressed the score to 42 with some fine stroke play before Neil holed out on the boundary off the bowling of J McCormick for 21. At this point there was a minor collapse with the next two batsmen Dillon Osborne and John Wheeler both losing their wickets in quick succession and Ards had slumped from 42 for 1 to 46 for 4, the position worsened when Gary Stewart was given out LBW (a very dubious decision as viewed from the clubhouse) for 16 with the score on 56. This brought young Andrew Savage and Michael Foster, and together these two players batted very sensibly and progressed the score onto 82 before Savage was bowled by J McCormick for 8. A further stand involving Foster and Roy Keenan took the score to 106 before Foster was caught on the boundary for a very well deserved 31. The remaining Ards wickets were taken by P McNamara with Ards finishing on 110 all out. J McCormick and P McNamara were the best of the Donaghadee bowlers finishing with 5 for 20 and 5 for 27 respectively.

Although the total was a low score it still provided Ards with something to defend however Ards needed to bowl very tightly and take early wickets. The two opening bowlers Gareth Rodgers and John Wheeler duly obliged and by the fourth over Donaghadee were on 10 for 3 with John Wheeler having figures or 3 for 2. There followed a minor revival involving B McLawrence and F Gilroy taking the score to 42 before Gilroy was eventually bowled closely followed by B McLawrence who lost his wicket with the score on 52 for a respectable 21 runs. Donaghadee continued to nudge ever nearer to the total however the Ards bowlers stuck to their task taking wickets at regular intervals and eventually the last Donaghadee player was bowled out with the score on 97.

This was an excellent result where fielding was tight, catches taken and the bowlers sticking to their task with Wheeler finishing on 4 for 11, Maxwell 3 for 20, Anderson 2 for 21, McCullough 1 for 18 and Rodgers 0 for 20. However with extras coming in on 29 (21 of which were wides) there is still room for improvement, even when the umpires appeared to be overly strict on their interpretation of a wide. Hopefully this can be addressed with both batsmen and bowlers attending the thursday night practice sessions.
The next match for the 1st XI is away to Victoria on June 13th where it is hoped we can repeat the success we had in the cup earlier this season.
