Ards Cricket Club Under 13 XI and Banogue Cup v N. Down on Wed 08 Jun 2011 at 6pm
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Ards U13's opened this year's league campaign with a local derby against North Down. Having achieved victories in both U11 and U13 fixtures last year, Ards went into the game with optimism but also expecting a tough contest. There was one change to the Ards line-up with Aaron McCutcheon replacing the unavailable Cameron Adams. North Down skipper Craig Irvine won the toss and put Ards into bat in a reduced 15 over game due to the uncertain weather. Ards openers, Ross and Warren Martin, started well combining solid defence and scoring of any loose deliveries with generally good (but sometimes risky!) running between the wickets. They put on a very good opening partnership of 31 before Warren was dismissed bowled by Skelton for a well-made 10. Ards quickly lost a second wicket when Skelton bowled Matthew McLawrence for 2. Ross Martin and Conor Balfour then took the score to 50 before Ross Martin fell caught in the covers by Irvine trying to push the score along with his score on 17, a very good knock which included 2 boundaries. Conor Balfour also departed in the last over bowled by Foster for 5 when going for a big 'heave-ho' leaving not out batsmen, Francis (0) and Lyons (1). The Ards innings closed on 54 for 4 of their allotted 15 overs which was probably about a par score given the damp conditions.

Ards were looking to opening bowlers Ross Martin and Conor Balfour to make early inroads into the North Down batting line-up and both bowled tight opening overs as North Down made a cautious start. Things livened up in the next over with Irvine hitting two boundaries of Ross Martin, who gave the perfect response bowling NCU U13 selection Irvine (8) with a fine leg stump yorker. Walker then joined Graham at the crease and their partnership of 34 put North Down well on the way to victory. But when Graham was run out for 7, failing to ground his bat when completing a second run, and almost immediately Quinn departed failing to trouble the scorers, well caught by McLawrence of Sean Francis, Ards hopes were renewed. However, Walker with a valuable match winning innings of 24 not out and Tumelson (6 no) brought North Down safely home with Walker's boundary of the last ball of the 12th over taking the Comber based side to 56 for 3 and a well deserved victory by 7 wickets.

Despite this loss, Ards can take some positives from the game. Key batsmen Ross and Warren Martin showed that they were finding some good form which bodes well for the rest of the season. Opening bowler, Conor Balfour, bowled accurately and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket and Ross Martin and Sean Francis again showed the potential to take wickets. The performance in the field was decent but there is scope for further improvement and more hard work in practice over the coming weeks will hopefully see a reduction in the number of extras conceded and more runs saved through good ground fielding.

The U13's next match is another tough one away to Saintfield.
