Saintfield v Ards Cricket Club Under 13 XI and Banogue Cup on Mon 13 Jun 2011 at 6pm
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report The U13's travelled to sunny Saintfield for their second league match of the season hopeful of improving upon last week's performance against North Down. A tough game was expected as Saintfield's significant investment in youth development is beginning to show its dividends with strong results at most levels. Cameron Adams returned to the starting line-up and he was joined by debutant, Adam Currie. Ards skipper, Ross Martin, won the toss and chose to bat first. After a promising start with 11 runs on the board after the opening couple of overs, Ards lost their first wicket when Ross Martin was bowled by McCavera for 1. The situation worsened when Adam Currie (0) was run out after a mix-up with Warren Martin. Martin and Cameron Adams then put together Ards' best partnership of the night with Martin picking up the singles and Adams taking a more aggressive approach. However, Adams was next to depart for 14 adjudged lbw after a very promising knock, including his first ever 6. Unfortunately, wickets continued to fall fairly regularly from that point with Balfour (2) Francis (1) McLawrence 1) and Lyons (4) failing to cope with Saintfield's dual spin attach of Gibbons and McConnell. With Stewart and McCutcheon failing to trouble the scorers, it was left to Luke Agnew to bring the Ards innings to a flourish with 7 not out including a nice boundary off opening bowler McCavera. While not at his fluent best, Warren Martin's patient knock of 17 not out held the Ards innings together and helped Ards to a total of 72 of their allotted 20 overs, which included 25 extras.

Ards knew they would have to bowl very well to have any chance of winning the game and they made the perfect start when captain, Ross Martin bowled McConnell (0) in his opening over. However, after Gibbons retired hurt, Murray (25 no) and McCavera (35 no) played very well defending the good deliveries, punishing any loose deliveries and running well between the wickets to take Saintfield to a comfortable victory by 9 wickets in the 16th over. The Ards bowlers can consider themselves a little unlucky not to have taken more wickets after finding the edge of the bat on quite a few occasions.

It's fair to say that the Ards boys didn't play to their full potential in this game although there were some pluses on the batting side with Warren Martin and Cameron Adams making useful contributions. On the bowling side along with some good deliveries, there were a few too many loose ones and extras conceded and the fielding also lacked sharpness so there's plenty to work on in training before the next match next Monday (20th) against Instonians A, the next in a run of tough fixtures for the U13's.
