Ards Cricket Club Under 13 XI and Banogue Cup v Bangor on Fri 01 Jul 2011 at 6.15pm
Ards Cricket Club Won by 64 runs

Match report This was the U13's second league match of the week at home against Bangor and they were looking to bounce back following the previous evening's defeat to Downpatrick. The weather conditions were considerably better than they had been last week when the original match had to be called off after 1 over due to persistent rain. Ards captain, Ross Martin, won the toss and chose to bat hoping his team would post a good score to put the pressure on Bangor during the run chase later. The Ards' openers, the Martin brothers, startly cautiously but the scoreboard kept ticking over due to a steady flow of extras until Warren Martin was out lbw for 4 playing across a straight delivery from Hawthorne. Adam Curry came to the wicket but he quickly departed for a dreaded 'duck' also lbw after missing a straight ball with Graham the successful bowler, just reward for his tidy opening spell. At 15 for 2 things were certainly not going to plan for Ards and a partnership was required to steady the 'ship'. And what a partnership it turned out to be as Ross Martin and Conor Balfour put on a century partnership for the 3rd wicket which turned out to be decisive in the end. Martin, having hit 38 against Downpatrick the previous night, maintained his excellent form with the bat with a super innings of 52 not out picking up 8 boundaries, including 3 sixes, as he made his first 50 for the U13's. He was given good support by Balfour whose innings of 34 (including a 6 and 5 fours) included 19 runs off a very 'eventful' 19th over before he unselfishly ran himself out in the last over to ensure his partner Martin got the strike and the opportunity to get his fifty, which he duly did with a boundary off the next ball. So the Ards innings finished on 121 for the loss of 3 wickets which was a very healthy total that seemed to put Ards firmly 'in the driving seat' at the halfway stage.

With the nornal opening attack of Martin and Balfour given a rest after their batting exploits, the 2 Adams (Curry and Lawther) opened the bowling. In the 2nd over, Lawther struck early with his 3rd ball bowling Graham and buoyed by his early success, he followed this up with the wicket of Reid in his second over caught by Crenshaw and McKee bowled in his third as Bangor struggled in the early stages of their innings. Lawther combined accuracy and economy in his 4 over spell of 3 for 5 and shows signs of promise that should be an asset to the U13's next year as well. McLawrence was the next wicket taker as Badanjan was well caught by Micah Crenshaw with his second catch of the evening and good fielding saw Boal run out for 5. Then Aaron McCutcheon 'joined the party' matching the success of Lawther taking 3 wickets for 10 runs in his 3 over spell dismissing Coffey (0) lbw and Miller (0) and McCoy (0) well caught by Ross Martin and Dougan respectively. It was Crenshaw who picked up the 9th Bangor wicket, dismissing top scorer McWatters (15) with another good catch by Dougan to maintain the generally high standard of catching on the night. With Ards using 8 bowlers on the night, Bangor bravely batted out the 20 overs with Houston and Hawthorne safely negotiating the last 4 overs and taking advantage of some very 'attacking' field settings by Ards to finish on 57 for 9.

So the Ards boys deservedly record their first win of the season by 64 runs with what was truly an all round team performance. Highlight of the night has to be the 'probable' record breaking U13's century partnership by Martin and Balfour, a debut 50 for Ross Martin - one of many to come we hope - and a good knock by Balfour who showed his potential with the bat. Other positives were the bowling especially by the youngers players, Lawther and McCutcheon, and evidence that all of the boys have some ability and potential that they can develop and work on during training. The fielding was generally of a high standard and some excellent catches were taken showing the benefits of the work that has been done at practice over recent weeks. A word also for Bangor who battled hard throughout and who weren't helped by the absence of some regulars on the night. The U13's final match of the league campaign takes place after the July holidays with a home match against Dundrum when the boys will be hoping to to finish the season on a high with a second victory.
