Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Cregagh on Sun 24 Jul 2011 at 12.00pm
Ards Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report After a comfortable win away at Victoria, Ards’ second game of the weekend was at home against Cregagh with both teams looking to join Donaghadee at the top of Section 3. Cregagh won the toss and chose to bat first in sunny conditions and on the best batting wicket seen at Ards this season.

Paul Cox took the first wicket with the score at 18 with Cregagh captain Peter Kerr well caught by Ryan Patterson at extra cover. Davy McCormick joined Philip Walker at the crease and punished any loose bowling. With the score at 76 Walker fell to the spin of Tim Carson with another great catch by Paul Cox this season. McCormick departed soon after, trapped lbw by the economical Davy McCullough. With Arun Thakur and Ian Kerr batting a big total looked on the cards for Cregagh. Paul Cox returned to dismiss Thakur for 62 which included 13 boundaries to leave Cregagh 177-5. Kerr continued to rotate the strike but received little support from the lower order. Tom Donnan returned with 3 late wickets and Carson bowled last man S Masih to leave Cregagh 207 all out in the 50th over. This was a good performance by Ards in the field with a score of 250+ looking on the cards at one stage.

A strong Ards team felt confident of chasing this total in the playing conditions and got off to a great start with openers Donnan and Jonathan Keenan putting on 52 for the first wicket with plenty of attacking shots from Donnan. Donnan departed for 37, bowled by the spin of Thakur. The ever-dangerous Davy McCormick then picked up two quick wickets to leave Ards 66-3. Keenan and Jonny Calvin took the score to 123 before Calvin edged to Thakur at slip. Keenan continued to accumulate runs at the other end and with Cregagh struggling to find a 5th bowler had further partnerships with Cox and Patterson to take Ards in sight of victory. Keenan finally departed for 66, caught by Andy Bell at long off with Ards needing just 9 runs to win from 2.3 overs. A tense finish was in store when Stewart Poole was bowled looking to clear the boundary but with 3 needed from the final over, Tim Carson held his nerve to find the extra cover boundary and secure a 1 wicket win with 4 balls remaining.

This was an excellent match and a good team effort by Ards to emerge victorious against an experienced Cregagh team and remain in contention for the Section 3 league title.
