Ards Cricket Club Under 15 XI and Graham Cup team v Armagh on Thu 24 May 2012 at 6.00pm
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report Following their excellent 1st round victory against Holywood Ards faced Armagh in the second round of the Graham Cup in a home fixture played at Comber Road. Armagh won the toss and put Ards in to bat. Armagh captain and NCU squad member Johnny Morton opened the bowling and completed 2 very accurate overs conceding only 1 run. Ards openers, the Martin brothers, weren't unduly concerned as they were picking up runs off Newell and K Marshall. Morton received good support from spinner J Wright who was also bowling a good line and conceded only 9 runs in his allotted 4 overs. The score had reached 37 when Ards lost their first wicket when Warren Martin was bowled by A Marshall for 13. Ross Martin was batting well at this stage but Ards' innings lost some momentum as Hughes found scoring difficult and was then dismissed for only 2 caught and bowled by A Marshall with the total on 51. Crawford joined Martin and apart from a big 6 over mid wicket, he also found it difficult to keep the score moving. He was next to fall bowled for 13 by Newell going for another big shot. Unfortunately, when the Ards innings needed a big final push Ross Martin, who again top scored with a well made 29, was caught at square leg off McCall. With opening bowler, Morton returning to bowl his last 2 overs conceding only 2 runs and picking up the wickets of Ferguson (8) and Cairns (1)and Ingham (0) caught off Newell the Ards innings closed on 82, which was probably 15/20 or so short of a challenging total.

The Ards bowlers knew they would have to bowl very well, keep extras to a minimum and receive good back up in the field to secure victory. Unfortunately with the exception of Roas Martin (4-0-9-1),the other bowlers struggled to find a good line and length and the concession of 21 extras left Armagh with just over 60 runs needed off the bat to make it through to the next round. Armagh made it into the 20's before K Marshall (12) was bowled by Warren Martin who followed this up having A Marshall (5) caught. But opener J Wright, who made 21 before being dismissed by Hughes in the 17th over, and Morton, who batted aggressively for 20 before he was caught off Ross Martin took Armagh within sight of victory. Despite the loss of 3 late wickets Armagh got home in the 19th over for the loss of 5 wickets to secure a quarter final tie away to Cregagh.

So a disappointing result and performance from the Ards boys who apart from Ross Martin performed below their capabilities. This was a missed opportunity and a match the players will look back at and think they could and should have won. So plenty to focus on in training over the coming weeks and let's hope the team can bounce back as the league campaign kicks off.
