Bangor v Ards Cricket Club Under 15 XI and Graham Cup team on Fri 01 Jun 2012 at 6.00pm
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 34 runs

Match report With no scheduled league fixture, the Under 15's played a friendly against neighbours Bangor one of the stronger teams at this age group and currently unbeaten in the local Division 1 of the league. Bangor openers Paddy Law and NCU player Taj Kwelu were quickly into their stride despite Ards opening bowlers Ross Martin and Conor Balfour bowling fairly well on the lively grass wicket at Ward Park. Kwelu in particular was batting very aggressively and despite escaping 2 close lbw shouts was ensuring Bangor's scoring rate was above a run a ball. Russell Hughes claimed the 1st wicket for Ards bowling Paddy Law for a patient 14. Crooks then picked up the vital wicket of Kwelu who was lbw for an excellent 53 which included seven 4's and a six. Conor Balfour returning to bowl his last 2 overs then took 3 wickets Ferris (bowled for 10), Miller (15) well caught by Dougan and N Khan (bowled for 3) to peg Bangor back a bit. Z Khan (7no) and Griffin (4no) brought the Bangor innings to a close on 120. Despite this apparently big total, the Ards bowlers performed much more consistently than in the most recent Graham Cup match with Balfour,Warren Martin, Hughes and Crooks also picking up wickets. Ross Martin was also unlucky not to pick up a wicket in his last 2 overs.

Ards knew the run chase would be a formidable challenge against a strong Bangor bowling attack and so it proved with the extreme pace of Kwelu and N Khan accounting for Ross Martin (3) and Russell Hughes (1) in the early overs. Conn Crawford and Warren Martin steadied the ship but found scoring quite difficult as Ards fell well behind the asking rate. Crawford was next to fall bowled by Ferris for 8 and Warren Martin followed shortly after for 10 caught by Miller trying to hit over extra cover. With Robbie Ingham failing to trouble the scorers, a heavy defeat looked on the cards but Michael Crooks and Marc Lyons put together the best partnership of the match for Ards combining good running with boundaries off the loose balls to take the Ards total into the 70's. Lyons was next man out for a well made 15 including two 4's and an excellent knock by Crooks (25 not out including 2 boundaries) and a late flourish from Conor Balfour (6no) brought the Ards innings to a close on a respectable 86 for 6.

Although this was a defeat, there were a number of positives to be taken from the game with promising batting performances from Crooks especially and also Lyons and more consistent and accurate bowling from the side as a whole. Next up for Ards is a home fixture against league newcomers Cliftonville when the team will be looking to kick off the campaign with a victory.
