Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Clogher on Sat 19 May 2007 at
Ards Cricket Club Won 6 wickets

Ards began their 2007 Ulster Bank Senior League Section 4 campaign on Saturday with a visit by league newcomers Clogher to Londonderry Park. The home side would stutter once again with the bat but would ultimately run out comfortable winners by six wickets in a rain-affected game.

The visitors were in fact astonished to find Londonderry Park bathed in sunshine on their arrival, their own ground largely underwater when they had set off over two hours earlier. Blustery, overcast and damp conditions meant there was only one decision Ards captain Richard McFeeters could make on winning the toss, and with his opposite number calling incorrectly, he duly invited Clogher to bat first in seamer-friendly conditions.

Johnny Osborne provided the early breakthrough when he trapped Kerr for 2. Having primarily bowled leg-cutters to that point, Johnny surprised the Clogher opener with one that swung back from outside off stump. Gareth Rodgers bowled as economically as ever from the Pavilion End, but for once couldn’t produce an early wicket as the Fermanagh side reached 26 for 1 after 13 overs.

A double-bowling change shortly afterwards saw the home side destroy the Clogher batting line up as the visitors crumbled to 53 all out. Chief instigator was Ryan Patterson who in the conditions put in front of him was almost unplayable. Ryan’s pace and bounce was perfectly complemented by the lower arm action of Neil Anderson, and they combined to take the last 7 wickets in only 10 overs. Ryan finished with figures of 4 for 6 while Neil’s five overs yielded 3 for 16. Both were assisted by 3 catches behind the stumps from Stewart Poole who coped admirably in conditions which lesser wicket-keepers would have struggled with.

Even in pursuit of such a paltry target of 54, it was important that Ards started confidently as conditions (following two further rain delays) ensured that batting was not becoming any easier. The loss of Anderson for a duck in the third over was a setback, but after a brief cameo of 15 from Dillon Osborne, the home side stumbled to 30 for 4, with Darren Hetherington especially unfortunate as the victim of the proverbial ‘daisycutter’ on middle stump.

As the visitors became excited though their inexperience showed and there were enough loose deliveries to enable Stephen Scott and McFeeters to knock off the remaining runs with no further alarms.

Winning the first league match is always ideal, but tougher tasks lie ahead, beginning with a visit to Cregagh this coming Saturday.
