Ards Cricket Club Lost 22 runs

Match report 1ST XI MATCH REPORT 26.05.07

Ards travelled to Cregagh on Saturday aiming to maintain their 100% start in Division 1 Section 4. However, in a game which ebbed and flowed from start to finish it was the home side who eventually came out on top by 22 runs.

Although dry in East Belfast at the start of the match the overcast sky and surface moisture under the covers persuaded Ards captain Richard McFeeters to insert the opposition on winning the toss.

In the last few years Cregagh’s top order has been their main strength so this was a genuine test for Ards’ opening bowlers Gareth Rodgers and Brian Maxwell. Former Ards pro Javed is renowned for pouncing on anything remotely short and initially the local side paid for erring in length to both batsmen. However, an over-confident Javed would succumb LBW to a full delivery from Rodgers for 12 with the score on 27.

After surviving a debatable appeal for caught behind, the experienced Ian Kerr, together with his son, fashioned a partnership of 72, the biggest of the match. For a while Ards were staring down the barrel of a total over 250 but the introduction of Darren Hetherington to the attack helped to redress the balance. Initially rusty, Darren dismissed both Kerrs in quick succession to reduce the home side to 103 for 3 after 30 overs.

From the other end, Neil Anderson bowled superbly with no luck whatsoever. Cregagh captain McCormick survived a dropped catch at mid-off by Rodgers.

After a brief Cregagh resurgence the return of Brian Maxwell to the attack changed the game dramatically as the home side capitulated from 144 for 3 to 164 for 9. Brian struck 4 times in his last 3 overs and along with Hetherington, who took 3 wickets, 3 catches and was responsible for a direct run-out, turned the game back in Ards’ favour.

Unfortunately at this stage the game was put in perspective as Rodney Beverland was struck down by illness while fielding and was taken to have a checkup accompanied by team-mate Alan Conway. Thankfully Rodney appears to have since made a quick recovery. Ards found it hard to focus on the remaining overs and a heavy shower made bowling and fielding difficult. Cregagh were able to scramble their way to 193 all out in the 49th over.

Ards made an exceptional start in pursuit of 194 with both Anderson and Stephen Scott playing some superlative shots all around the wicket. The pair had compiled 64 for the opening wicket before Neil was adjudged lbw for 22. Hetherington and Scott then added 31 for the second wicket in a partnership dominated by Stephen as he scored his maiden 50 for the 1st XI. Ian McLean joined Scott with the score on 95 and found his timing immediately. Although the damp outfield made boundaries hard to come by, the scoreboard was ticking over until Scott was caught behind for an excellent 64.

McFeeters perished soon after as the required rate hit 7 an over, and when McLean was unfortunately run out for 27 Ards’ chances were all but over. Late contributions from Stewart Poole (15) and JP Schroeder (8) saw Ards finish on 171 for 8, 22 runs shy of the Cregagh total.

The local side, already depleted coming in to the fixture, acquitted themselves very well on a difficult day and there were many positives to take against what was a full-strength Cregagh team aiming for promotion.
