PSNI v Ards Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2007 at
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Ards were aiming to bounce back from consecutive defeats in Ulster Bank Senior League Section Four on Saturday with a win at Newforge against PSNI. However, in a dramatic match which concluded on Monday night after heavy rain brought an abrupt end to proceedings on Saturday, PSNI scraped home by four wickets off the final ball of the game.

Renowned for being an excellent ground for batting, Ards captain Richard McFeeters opted to bat first on winning the toss despite the pitch being a little softer than usual as a result of the recent heavy rainfall.

This decision appeared correct early on as Ards made a positive start on a dreary afternoon. While PSNI captain Flanagan bowled the occasional unplayable delivery, Neil Anderson and Stephen Scott were generally in control and duly posted their second 50 run opening partnership of the season in the 13th over. Shortly after Neil chipped straight to mid-wicket for 22, but Stephen and Johnny Osborne maintained the momentum in a partnership dominated by Scott.

Two lengthy rain delays didn’t help the middle order as the batsmen had to play themselves in each time and cope with a much slower outfield. When Osborne was lbw for 8 Darren Hetherington joined Scott and progressed the score to 132 for 2 before a mini-collapse ensued.

Darren was caught and bowled for the second game in succession for 22, Stephen was caught for a fine 51 and with the cheap dismissal of Ian McLean and debutant Nathan Burns Ards, now at 153 for 5, were forced to revise their original target.

With excellent lower order contributions from McFeeters (29), JP Schroeder (13) and a brisk 21 not out from Peter Thompson the away side posted a useful total of 217 for 8 from 50 overs.

With the PSNI innings not starting until around 6.30pm and bad weather closing in the only chance of forcing a result was if Ards ripped through the home side’s batting order.

Unfortunately this failed to materialise as PSNI produced consecutive partnerships in excess of 50 as the Ards bowling attack, shorn of three regular bowlers, struggled to provide any penetration. On the other hand the Ards fielding was superb all over the park with many diving stops saving many runs and causing confusion between the wickets. Seasoned campaigner PJ Whyte held the innings together after surviving a sharp chance early in his innings and had good support from Scroggs (25) and McCausland (27).

When bad light and heavy rain forced play to be called off for the day PSNI were in a comfortable position of 155 for 3 after 36 overs, with Whyte 62 not out and former Ards player Cleland McCann unbeaten on 6.

NCU rules dictate that such circumstances require completion of the game on a Monday night, the benefit to Ards being that Whyte in essence had to start again. Altohugh an immediate breakthrough was not forthcoming, pressure from Hetherington and the off-spin of Ian McLean finally induced the run out of Whyte for 88. When McCann was forced to retire hurt for 24 with a damaged hamstring, the equation was still only 12 runs from 3 overs. McLean then removed a nervous Flanagan for 5, before a few agricultural shots from the PSNI lower order brought the scores level with one ball remaining.

With the field in an old-fashioned swing across the line proved effective and the ball raced to the boundary to leave Ards wondering what might have been. An exciting match offered no consolation for an Ards team which expected to win this fixture, but credit must be given to PSNI for a solid batting performance.
