Victoria v Ards Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at
Ards Cricket Club Won by 240 runs

Ards’ late season surge continued on Saturday with a comfortable win against a weary Victoria side at the Gordon Playing Fields. Many of the Lurgan side’s veterans were doubtless hoping to win the toss and bat having played the previous day, which is precisely why Ards captain Richard McFeeters opted to make first use of a decent-looking track when the call of heads proved correct.

Ards’ openers Neil Anderson and Ian McLean made a positive start despite Victoria’s bowlers extracting some sideways movement with the new ball. 36 was on the board before McLean was lbw for 11. Anderson and new partner Gary Stewart continued the run rate they established the previous week against Donaghadee, but once again Stewart perished when well set for 25.

Ryan McClements then continued his recent fine form, striking his second ball over the bowler’s head for 6 and hitting another huge maximum in a quickfire 42. Drives over extra cover were a feature of Anderson’s excellent innings of 51, but when both he and McClements departed in quick succession Ards were 155 for 5 after 31 overs.

While not a precarious position, a sudden fall of wickets could have seen the local side fall short of the par score of 200. At this stage though McFeeters shared 50 partnerships with both Paul Mawhinney and Ryan Patterson to take the game out of Victoria’s reach.

Given the freedom to play expansive shots, Paul timed shots all round the wicket in a cameo of 29, while Ryan showed why he can become a genuine all-rounder with an entertaining 31 not out to take Ards within sight of 300. This target proved just out of reach after McFeeters was bowled for 59, but 292 for 8 was comfortably Ards’ highest total of the season.

With a second match in two days catching up with Victoria, little resistance was offered in their reply. Anderson (3), Johnny Osborne (2) and Brian Maxwell, with one wicket plus an excellent catch, broke the back of the Victoria innings before Paul Cox wrapped the game up in style with 3-0 in just over two overs. The home side were all out for 52.

Ards complete their league campaign next Sunday with a home fixture against probable titlists BISC, aiming to make it seven wins from 12 matches.
