Derriaghy v Ards Cricket Club Under 15 XI and Graham Cup team on Wed 04 Jun 2014 at 6.30
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 14 runs

Match report The Under 15's kicked off their season with an away game against Derriaghy in the Graham Cup. Favourites Derriaghy won the toss and chose to bat in good conditions on a small ground with a short boundary on one side. Derriaghy's innings got off to a good start with the openers scoring at about 4 an over until Jack Smith dismissed Jones (11) in the 5th over. Aaron Grimshaw was next to strike in the 10th over having J Cardosi (5) caught by Owen Baillie. Sean Francis then got his reward for some tight off-spin bowling dismissing the other opener, Craig (16), who was well caught by Jack Smith at mid off. Aaron Grimshaw picked up his second wicket having skipper, Nelson (6), caught by Jack Smith. Anderson (9) was then run out and Nathan Grimshaw had Stewart (0) lbw but a late partnership by S Cardosi (17no) and Edgar (5no) and some loose Ards bowling saw Derriaghy post a very good score of 116 off the allotted 20 overs, which sadly included 42 extras!!. Best of the Ards bowlers were Jack Smith (2-22), Sean Francis (1-14) and Aaron Grimshaw (2-19).

The Ards reply got off to a slow start with Jack Smith and Harry Jackson batting fairly cautiously and finding it difficult to gain any momentum. Jackson (4) was caught behind in the 6th over and Conrad Parkinson (0) and Nathan Grimshaw (0) followed soon after as Ards lost quick wickets and fell well behind the run rate. But Jack Smith and Owen Baillie gave Ards some cause for optimism putting together a good partnership before Smith fell for a well made 26, including 4 boundaries. Aaron Grimshaw kept up the momentum as he and Owen Baillie took the attack to the Derriaghy bowlers before he caught & bowled by Anderson for 11, including 2 boundaries. Unfortunately Ards' faint hopes faded when Owen Baillie who played excellently hitting 3 boundaries and a maximum was bowled for 25 going for another big shot. Aaron McCutcheon (1 no), Adam Lawther (3) and Callum McDaid (3no) got some late runs in the last couple of overs but the Ards innings closed on 102 for 8 falling agonisingly short by 14 runs.

Although defeated there were lots of positives to take from this performance with some good batting and bowling performances. But also there were a number of areas where there's a lot of room for improvement especially catching and reducing the number of wides which eventually proved to be the difference as Ards batsmen actually scored more runs than Derriaghy's.

The league campaign starts on Friday 6th June with a home match against Bangor.
