Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Dunmurry on Sat 25 Jul 2015 at 12.00
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 24 runs

Match report Ards I’s penultimate home match of the season on Saturday was against Dunmurry CC. Dunmurry have enjoyed an upsurge in their club’s fortunes, lying in third place at the start of the day with Ards one from the bottom of Ulster Bank Section 3. Both teams had a lot to play for. On a sunny but chilly day Dunmurry won the toss and elected to bat first on what proved to be a true Londonderry Park pitch slowed by the recent rain. The Dunmurry innings was dominated, after the early loss of Connelly to Devlin, by a partnership of 145 between Ross (39) and Coburn (114 no). Coburn’s was a powerful innings full of dominant shot making, containing thirteen boundaries, and latterly plenty of singles as he made sure of his century. Although enjoying a little luck soon after scoring his fifty, Coburn never really looked in trouble as Dunmurry scored a run a ball for the last ten overs. A final total of 208-4 at the end of the innings could have been higher had not Peter Devlin bowled well for a haul of 3-26 off his allotted overs. Of the other bowlers, both Conor Balfour (0-24) and Jack Smith (0-28) bowled tightly without luck but with skill belying their years. With the wicket looking increasingly flat, and the outfield quickening up, chasing 209 to win was going to be a test of Ards’ resolve.

A good start would be necessary if the total were to be chased down successfully, but Ards lost both openers as the total reached 22 in the 6th over and the third wicket fell at 42 in the tenth over, leaving a rebuilding job to be mounted by the experienced Gary Stewart and vice-captain Owen Roberts. Although both found their timing hard to come by at first on the slow pitch, both grew in confidence as they put on 68 for the fourth wicket in fourteen overs, keeping Ards in touch with the required run rate. Stewart departed for a well made 29 bringing young Jack Smith to the crease to join Roberts. The two youngsters put on another 30 until Roberts was disappointingly bowled for a hard fought 48. Smith contributed another promising innings of 22 before being caught and bowled by Prasanth and Ards began to fall behind the required rate as wickets fell at regular intervals. Eventually, Ards were bowled out for 184, with two overs unused in the innings, to leave Dunmurry victors by 24 runs. The trio of Asian seam bowlers were the key to Dunmurry’s success with them taking seven of the Ards wickets to fall. The result leaves Ards still one from bottom in Section 3 with away trips to Monaghan and Dungannon to come in the next two weeks. It will be vital for Ards to put out strong sides in the last four matches in order to finish the season in a positive fashion.
