Ards Cricket Club 2nd XI v Cregagh III on Sun 06 Sep 2015 at 1.00
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report Ards were put into bat on a firm Londonderry Park track with a greenish twinge by Cregagh. The first wicket fell in the second over as Nihell was bowled by D. Harris. This brought Jack Smith to the crease and his first two shots were leg-side boundaries until he pulled a muscle going for a quick single, retiring hurt, and bringing Joel Ferguson to the crease. Ferguson led a charmed life before being bowled for 8 and then Shamu was caught on the long-on boundary for an uncharacteristic 13. This brought Gary Niblock and Paul O'Brien together for the largest partnership of the innings. A mixture of well judged singles and some lusty blows to the boundary brought Ards back into the game as both batsmen rebuilt the innings. The unfortunate run-out of O'Brien for 21 fortunately did not diminish the scoring rate as Niblock (42 no) and Blair Savage (7 no) batter through to the end of the innings with Ards scoring a par 118-4 off 20 overs.

Cregagh got off to a sedate start with 16 on the board when Watt was bowled by Conor Balfour. Unfortunately, the fifth over was smacked for 22 as Cregagh quickly began building up a momentum the Ards bowlers struggled to rein back. Although injured, Jack Smith managed to apply some pressure with his off-spin, and Robbie Sinclair bowled an excellent spell for a paltry 16 runs. The return of Shamu yielded only 9 runs but Cregagh scored the winning runs off the second ball of the last over earning them a 9 wicket victory. Kerr played very well for an unbeaten 48, ably supported by Catterson on an unbeaten 29, but both were fed a variety of loose balls and the Ards bowlers again conceded a large number of wides (22) and consequent extra balls that ultimately cost them victory.

In the end two important cricket lessons should be learned: that the batsmen need to score off a greater number of balls in a T20 innings, pushing their ones and twos as Niblock and O'Brien did, rather than looking simply to hit boundaries. The Ards total was at least 10 short. With the ball, bowlers need to have the mental discipline to put the ball in good areas more regularly and to cut out the wides which give the opposition free runs. That said, the margin of defeat looks huge but in a T20 match its the runs that count greater than wickets taken and Ards did well to take the match to the final over.
