Dunmurry v Ards Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1.00
Ards Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Last Saturday Ards CC 1st XI, sponsored by Roma’s, made the short journey across to Fullerton Park for their second league match of the season, against Dunmurry. Winning the toss Ards skipper Conor Sims inserted Dunmurry on what looked to be a challenging pitch. Conor Balfour and Peter Devlin, opening the attack for Ards were hard to get away in the opening exchanges, with the ball swinging and deliveries jumping awkwardly, or shooting along the ground for the batsmen. It was Devlin who made the initial breakthrough winning an impassioned LBW appeal, swiftly followed by Balfour bowling the number three. No batsman was sure of a long stay on this pitch but it was the introduction of Sean Francis and Sims to the attack which precipitated a major collapse of the Dunmurry order. Francis (3-23), with clever flight and spin, tore the middle order apart and skipper Sims (2-10) was nigh on unplayable, both bowling their full allotment of eight overs. Devlin and Balfour returned to mop up the tail as Dunmurry totalled a meagre 85, with Mr Extras (29) top score for Dunmurry.

In reply, Ards were seventeen without loss off the first eleven balls before Sims mistimed a pull to mid-wicket. Jack Smith (13) combined with Adam Balfour to raise the score to 37 before an indiscreet drive cost him his wicket. After the early fall of Farley it took a partnership of 25 in quick time from Balfour and Fitzsimmons to take the pressure off the rest of the order, a stand characterised by carefully placed singles and twos as both used their experience to blunt the Dunmurry attack. When Balfour (20) fell, quickly followed by Crooks, Fitzsimmons and Devlin attacked to take the total to 85 before Fitzsimmons chanced his arm, once too many times, and was caught at deep long-on for 20. Matt Hulbert stroked the winning run two balls later as Ards chased down the total in the twentieth over.

This was an important win for Ards on a difficult pitch which sets the side up nicely for the forthcoming home match with Larne this Saturday. This was a match that could have easily been lost with many experienced batsmen missing for this game, but the young bowling attack acquitted itself well, and a few wise heads saw Ards over the line. Ards CC 1st XI is grateful for the support of Sportsbeat who sponsored the match ball for the Dunmurry match.
