Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Dunmurry on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 12.00
Ards Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets DLS

Match report After a weather-induced hiatus of four weeks since their last match, Ards CC’s 1st XI, sponsored by Martin Phillips, finally made it back onto the field in a home Ulster Bank Section 3 league match last Saturday. Unfortunately, their opponents Dunmurry brought only a depleted team of eight players, but they are to be commended for fulfilling the fixture despite the temptation to concede.

Winning the toss, the Dunmurry skipper decided to bat first on a firm Londonderry Park pitch, with the two experienced openers putting on 37 for the first wicket and enjoying some good fortune as both Devlin and Balfour passed the bat at regular intervals. It took the introduction of Sean Francis to break the deadlock as he had King caught by Jack Smith at cover, and bowled Irvine next ball. At 44, the dangerous Pamulaparthi was removed by skipper Sims, bringing Venkat to the crease to combine with the opener in a partnership of 36, aided and abetted by a number of wides from the Ards change bowlers. Matt Hulbert, courtesy of an excellent catch standing up by keeper Jackson, and a reflex catch at slip from Nihell, broke the threatening partnership at 80 and then dismissed Venkat with the score at 99. The returning Devlin then took the last wicket, dismissing Dunmurry for 109 in the 27th over.

After tea, Ards’ openers Balfour and Nihell got off to a rollicking start, with some aggressive running between the wickets and strong shots to the boundary. At the end of the 7th over they had reached 53 for no wicket before the long threatened rain came, forcing both sides from the field. After a lengthy delay, the umpires recalculated the target, asking Ards to chase 91 in 27 overs. In fact it took Ards just another 6 overs to reach the DLS target of 91 with the solitary loss of Nihell for 28, and significantly improving the side’s net run rate for the season, which could prove vital in a tight race for second place. Adam Balfour finished with an unbeaten 33 and Jack Smith 18no as Ards won the match by 9 wickets to kick start the second half of the league season, and move them up to joint third in the league.
