Ards Cricket Club 1st XI v Portadown on Sat 31 May 2008 at
Ards Cricket Club Lost By 40 Runs

Match report Ards Firsts came up short in the first of their encounters with fellow Section Four Title contenders, Portadown. Having been relegated the previous season, Portadown were always going to be the benchmark against which Ards would have to judge themselves in terms of promotion opportunities.

Although Portadown eventually eased to a 40 run victory, Ards gave a good account with only a 10 over spell towards the end of the Portadown innings, where Man of the Match, Hewitt, plundered some easy runs off the Ards bowling attack, being the main difference in the teams.

Once again a visiting captain won the toss and chose to bat on a firm true wicket. Ards bowlers Barrett and Rodgers regularly beat the bat but the Portadown batsmen still got a good start as any connection with bat on ball, controlled or otherwise, produced a boundary score. Stephen Scott also went for a few runs but eventually got the breakthrough, bowling Haddock for 35. At 15 overs Portadown were well placed at 65 for 1.

Captain, Ian McLean introduced the double change of Anderson and McCullough and with both striking in their first overs and McCullough following up with a second wicket in his third, Portadown were suddenly 80 for 4. McCullough continued to bowl a tight line and with Christie Barrett back in the attack to pick up a wicket, Ards had this middle part of the Portadown innings under controll with their opponents 109 for 5 in 34 overs. The only problem was that dangerman Hewitt remained at the crease and with the help of some lower order resistance, he effectively took the game away from Ards scoring 89 runs for a final total of 233 for 7. Ards bowlers Maxwell and Osborne did pick up two further Portadown wickets but the Ards attack as a whole went for 120 runs in this 16 over period - way too many and this would leave the batsmen quite an uphill task.

unfortunately the Ards run chase faltered before it even started with five wickets falling for less than 70 runs. Big contributions were needed from the top four but only Keenan (14) and Anderson (21) made an impression on the scoreboard. However, Ards were given hope from the 25th to 45th overs as a challenge was mounted through two excellent partnerships between Stephen Scott (73) and Paul Mawhinney (11) and the Scott and Gareth Rodgers (13 no). Whilst Scott was at the wicket Ards had hope, and although his task required him to hit eight an over, he certainly gave it a real go as the Portadown nerve started to falter. Two big overs where 16 and 13 runs were smashed certainly unerved the Portadown bowlers.

However, the reintroduction of Hewitt, who claimed Scott for 73 in the 45th over effectively put paid to Ards' challenge. Despite late order runs from Rodgers, Maxwell and McCullough, Ards fell well short on 193 for 8. Portadown were worthy winners and Ards must now re-group for the equally important fixture away to Clogher.

Match Summary - Portadown 233 for 7 (Hewit 89, Haddock 35, McCullough 2 for 33): Ards 193 for 8 ((Scott 73, Hewitt 3 for 39)
