Ards Cricket Club Won By 142 Runs

Match report Ards were hosts to Clogher last Saturday in what was scheduled to be the final league game of the 2008 season. The miserable weather through August, of course, means that Ards still have a backlog of fixtures still to complete during September but this comprehensive win, by 142 runs, keeps Ards in the running for promotion as runners-up to likely league winners, Drummaness. To achieve this Ards will require victories in each of their remaining five fixtures starting with an away game at Drumaness next week.

Ards eased to victory over Clogher and in doing so completed the double over their opponents. Ian McLean won the toss and chose to give hit batsmen some time at the crease. The Ards innings, completed on a slow damp wicket, revolved around Ards opener Nathan Burns, who played a diligent and watchful innings of 50 in almost 40 overs. Major contributions were also made by Paul Mawhinney (22), who enjoyed a 50+ run opening partnership with Burns before being unluckily run out backing up, Garry Stewart with his 26 giving impetus to the innings and further useful contributions coming from the lower order through Andrew Savage (22) and Gareth Rodgers (14n/o). Ards batted through their 50 overs posting 201 runs with the final wicket falling to the last ball.

In response Clogher never got close to challenging the Ards score and were all out for 59 inside 26 overs. Their only significant contribution came from opener Maxwell who finally fell as the seventh wicket for 30.

All the Ards bowlers took wickets. David McCullough and Brian Maxwell led the attack picking up two wickets each at the start of the Clogher innings with Maxwell only being denied a hat-trick when a very confident LBW appeal was turned down. Change bowlers Ryan Patterson and Gareth Rodgers kept up the pressure with Patterson taking three wickets including that of Maxwell. He also had the opportunity to claim a hat-trick but the Clogher number eight stood firm. Gareth Rodgers chipped in with one wicket from his four overs as did Andrew Savage from his one over.

A comprehensive victory for Ards but the team knows the remaining fixtures will provide sterner tests.

Match summary - Ards 201 all out (N Burns 50, G Stewart 26, P Mawhinney 22, A Savage 22): Clogher 59 all out (R Patterson 3 for 14, D McCullough 2 for 8, B Maxwell 2 for 19)
