Ards Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets

Match report Ards Ease to Victory over Victoria

A much improved performance by Ards saw them ease to a 7 wicket defeat over old adversaries Victoria from Lurgan.Once again Archie Moore and Co produced an excellent cricket wicket and their was little surprise that the visiting Captain chose to bat first on winning the toss.

Christie Barrett and Gareth Rodgers led the attack with lively opening spells which put the Victoria batsmen on the backfoot. However, it took Ards until the 10th over before Rodgers broke through, bowling Black for 10. Neil Anderson took the second wicket early in his spell but with Victoria's two most experienced batsmen now at the crease (Follis and Bunting) a further breakthrough from either Anderson or McCullough could not be found. However the tight spells from these experienced bowlers continued to restrict the Victoria run rate whereby at the 25 over mark, the visitors had less than 50 runs on the scoreboard.

On resumption after the drinks interval Bunting decided to counter-attack as he started to go after the bowling. Having reached 30, however, he was trapped LBW by Ryan Patterson - a crucial wicket to swing the match in Ards' favour. A second wicket followed soon after to Patterson and when Follis fell for 24 to the returning Rodgers, Victoria had lost half their wickets for less than 100 runs.

Ards were now looking to run through their opposition, however a hard hitting 43 not out from Belshaw saw Victoria past the 150 mark despite the regular fall of wickets at the other end with Rodgers finishing with 3 for 29, Barrett 2 for 15, Patterson 3 for 21 and Anderson picked up his second to leave Victoria 155 all out.

Having chased down over 200 runs the previous week, Ards were confident of reaching their target. An early blow was the loss of Jonathan Keenan but this was countered by the explosive start given by Dillon Osborne as he powered 26 runs, including 5 boundaries, in only a matter of overs before he became Bunting's second wicket.

The run cahse was then taken up by two Ards batsmen in excellent form - Neil Anderson and Garry Stewart. Both batted positively despatching poor deliveries to the boundaries with fluent strokeplay whilst rotating the strike by through picked off singles. Such was the confidence of these two players that they both passed the 50 run mark, with Stewart scoring 58 before falling to a catch with victory in sight. This left Nathan Burns (10 not out) the oportunity to join Anderson (51 not out) in bringing Ards to victory in only 22 overs.

A comfortable victory with the aerly order batsmen looking in good form. A better bowling display, where the return of Christie Barrett added extra threat, was given by the bowlers although further improvement in consistantly bowling line and length is needed for future, more testing games.

Summary: Victoria 155 all out (Rodgers 3 for 29; Patterson 3 for 21) Ards 157 for 3 (Stewart 58; Anderson 51 no; Osborne 26)
