Ards Cricket Club 2nd XI v Instonians 5s on Sun 17 Jun 2018 at 1.00
Ards Cricket Club Lost by 34 runs

Match report Ards 2nds lose high scoring match!

In what was another highly competitive junior league match, with close to 400 runs scored, Ards Seconds could not quite chase down a total of 208 set by their visitors, Instonians. In the end, Ards fell 34 runs shy of their target, reaching 174 for 5 before the overs ran out.

In very blustery conditions, the young Ards bowling attack had difficulty in maintaining a disciplined line and length as the strong Instonians’ batting line-up looked to attack the Ards bowlers from the start. This positive approach from the visitors helped them take advantage of any wayward deliveries offered off the flat artificial wicket. In particular, two batsmen got settled and were then able to dictate the rate of scoring despite the unfaltering efforts of the Ards bowlers. The batsmen were also given a few ‘lives’ with a number of catches going down which, if taken, would have helped pull back the high run rate. The fielding skills of the team do, perhaps, need some work on training nights, although it was the case that the swirling winds played their part in making catching a particularly perilous operation.

It is rare for 100s to be scored at this level but this was achieved by Instonians opener, J Dickson, who ‘carried his bat’ with a score of 106 not out. He was also well supported by J Welshman who hit an enterprising 51. Despite bowling for most of the innings against two well set batsmen, the Ards bowlers stuck to their task well, picking up three wickets through Hawkins, Khan and Allen plus a late run out. Nevertheless, a score of 208 for 4 was always going to be a challenging target for the Ards team to chase.

In response to what was a formidable total in 20 overs, Ards opener Arafat Khan did not hold back as he decided to deal in boundaries! He set about hitting every bowler he faced for a series of 4s and 6s as he raced past 50 in no time at all. At the 13 over stage, with the score over 120 and Khan looking for his own personal 100, supported through good contributions from Joel Ferguson and Jonah Ditty, Ards were incredibly up with the required run rate to win the match! Arafat’s dismissal though, for a superbly entertaining 86, was always going to halt the Ards team’s progress towards their total. Mind you, Eddie Hawkins did his very best to keep the momentum going with a very positive 28 not out but it was always going to be the case that the overs would run out as he and Sean Francis did their best to close in on the Instonians total. A final score of 174 for 5 was certainly a very creditable effort which would, on most other occasions, provide a victory for the team.

This Ards team has certainly been involved in some exciting matches so far this season and, whether winning or losing (now 2 wins and 3 defeats), they are enjoying their cricket under the leadership of Conn Crawford, who continues to lead the team with good captaincy skills and shrewdness.
