Ards Cricket Club 2nd XI v CIYMS 5s on Sun 01 Jul 2018 at 12.00
Ards Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Ards 2nds overcome CIYMS in high scoring match!

In what was a good weekend for Ards Cricket Club, the Second XI followed up the previous day’s First XI victory with a fine win over Junior League opponents CIYMS.

On a hot and sunny day at Londonderry Park, the artificial wicket and fast outfield yielded another run fest for the spectators with close to 400 runs scored in under 50 overs. In their previous match, the Ards team just failed to chase down a total of 200, but on this occasion the story was different with Ards passing the required 194 total with more than an over to spare.

CIYMS won the toss so, once again, the Ards bowling attack took to the field first. The experienced opening attack of Gareth Rodgers and Arafat Khan took the new ball and for the most part kept the CI run rate to a manageable level. In particular, Arafat was his accurate, miserly self, conceding only 12 runs in 5 overs. CIYMS opener, P Blowes, looked to give their innings some momentum by playing more expansive shots towards the shorter boundary, but once his brisk 29 ended through a fine run out by Eddie Hawkins, the CIYMS momentum was cut short. Ards took advantage of this run out by then taking a further three quick wickets, two to change bowler Hawkins and one to Arafat to leave CIYMS on 66 for 4 in 15 overs.

That CIYMS were able to repair their innings to a total of 193 in 25 overs was mostly due to one batsman, R Elliott (79) who took an aggressive approach to any bowling that was slightly off-line. Despite this all-out attack from the CIYMS No.5 batsman, the Ards bowlers did well to restrict any run gathering from the other end, with the next highest score being 14. Hawkins and Rodgers both returned to pick up two more wickets - Hawkins for impressive figures of 4 for 30 and Rodgers 2 for 46, whilst Roberts, Allen and Ditty all troubled the opposition batsmen. The only negative was the amount of wides conceded by the Ards bowling – 30 odd! That’s 30 extra runs and, effectively, five extra overs that needed to be bowled. Reduce those and the total to be chased would have been closer to 150-160.

However, given that in their previous match, Ards had nearly chased down 200 in 20 overs, there was a confident feeling that, if they applied themselves, the 194 target could be reached in 25 overs. This confident feeling was slightly undone when Roberts fell early but there was then a second wicket partnership of the highest quality between Arafat and Ethan Davies as they put on 114 in 13 overs. Arafat has been in really good form this season, making significant contributions in every match. Once again, he played positively from the start as he punished both poor and good bowling alike. For CIYMS, there was no let up as they also had to contend with Davies’ powerful and impressive batting display. Yes, both players hit good boundaries, including four sixes from Davies, but neither player was reckless in their shot making and they also rotated the strike where possible. CIYMS’ bowling had little or no answer.

In the 13th over, Arafat fell stumped for 58 but Davies continued with his excellent innings, this time with Joel Ferguson offering good support. Joel, again, has been a regular contributor with the bat this season and his bright innings of 35 also included a number of boundaries including two sixes. CIYMS likely sensed a chance when both Ferguson and Davies (with a fine 67) departed. However, Captain Conn Crawford and young batsman Jonah Ditty did not panic as they paced themselves over the last few overs to bring Ards across the line to victory with 12 not out and 13 not out respectively.

This was a worthy victory for the Ards team. They have just fallen short in two previous high scoring run chases so it was really pleasing to see them get the job done on this occasion. The quality of batsmen is there and the bowling strength is good. The fielding also was better this week and it was good to see those younger members of the team (Dominic Allen, Jonah Ditty and Euan Burrows) contribute to the team performance by their positive and wholehearted actions on the field. The same can be said for the not so young Jonny Alexander! Mention also for Conn Crawford, the team’s young but importantly, enthusiastic captain. For his first season leading a team, he is doing a better than good job and he will only benefit for the future! Good to see his team mates, experienced and youthful alike, give him the support he deserves.

Having reached the mid-way point of the summer months, a record for the Seconds of three wins from six matches is a fair reflection of their season so far. Keep and indeed improve on the skills being shown in the second half of the summer will see the team through to a successful season.
