Ards Cricket Club 2nd XI v Monaghan 2s on Sun 22 Jul 2018 at 12.00
Ards Cricket Club Won by 8 runs

Match report Ards 2nds show their resolve in another narrow victory!

Ards Cricket Club Second XI really are the team to watch this year as they, once again, came out on the right side of a closely fought and exciting match – this time defeating Monaghan 2nds by a margin of 8 runs!

Sun and a warm breeze at Londonderry Park welcomed our visitors who had travelled the furthest of any team this year to play this young 2nds team. Once again, the artificial wicket and fast outfield yielded a high scoring run fest with over 400 runs scored in the 60 overs.

Given the recent form of the Ards batsmen, Captain Conn Crawford decided to bat first with a score in excess of 200 in mind. Openers, Owen Roberts and Conn himself, eased themselves into their respective innings, initially taking stock of the bowling before opening up with shots to both cover and mid-wicket boundaries to punish both any bad, and not so bad, bowling. They had made it through 15 of the 30 overs untroubled to reach a score of 90 when Crawford stretched for a wide delivery providing a sharp return catch to the bowler, to depart for a well-made 32.

Roberts was joined by Ethan Davies at No.3, who hoped to pick up where he had left off in his previous match when he had hit 67 – and, with added pressure of family watching from the boundary, he did! Davies and Roberts batted really well together for a further 10 overs, clinically choosing when to defend and when to attack and never allowing the Monaghan bowlers to gain any advantage. A push in the tempo with 5 overs remaining did, however, see both depart to Monaghan’s best bowler, Husnain, for 59 and 58 respectively.
Although their respective scorecards will show a good number of boundaries, including two sixes for Roberts, both players were also able to rotate the strike for singles and well run twos which all added to the Monaghan fielders’ fatigue.

In the final 5 overs it was left to Joel Ferguson and Sean Francis to push the Ards total on past the 200 mark with, again, some lusty hitting and quick running between the wickets. They achieved the target total with 16 and 19 respectively to leave Ards on a useful 205 for 4 after 30 overs.

Due to the late start of the match and because of other commitments, Ards were facing potentially 10 to 15 overs in the field with only 9 players which would leave gaps where boundaries would be hard to defend. Early wickets would therefore be needed to put the Monaghan batsmen on the back foot and courtesy of Sean Francis, these early breakthroughs were made as he picked up two Monaghan wickets to catches. A further and deserved wicket was taken by Dominic Allen, when he bowled the very useful and dangerous looking opener for 24. This, together with the tight bowling from Eddie Hawkins, left Monaghan behind the run rate at the halfway mark of 15 overs with only 66 on the scoreboard.

Ards were now down to 9 players in the field and the Monaghan batsmen started to find the gaps to the boundary more regularly with Husnain particularly to the fore. However, when Roberts had him caught out for 59 the momentum swung back in Ards’ favour with the score on 132 for 5 in 20 overs. Despite the Monaghan batsmen’s best efforts, all the Ards bowlers stuck to their task. Aided by a couple of run outs and with two pacey overs from Ferguson at the end, Ards deservedly had held on to win by the 8 run margin with Monaghan finishing on 197 for 8.

Once again, this was an all-round team effort by Ards which provided perhaps a more comprehensive victory than the narrow margin suggests. The batting is showing good consistency with some able players not even getting to the crease on this occasion. The bowling unit is well balanced too with the only negative the amount of wide deliveries being bowled – Ards effectively bowled 35 overs rather than 30!

Most importantly though, the team spirit is excellent! With the top 4 or 5 batsmen being so consistent, there are players who come into the team who do not have the opportunity every week to bat and perhaps do not get the opportunity to bowl either – but what they bring to the team through their efforts and support on the field is invaluable to the captain. This week, players like Rory McVeigh, Joel Craig and Jonny Alexander gave every ounce of effort they had in helping the team to victory.

The Seconds now sit with a winning record of four wins from seven matches and are in the top three in their league. Could well be an interesting end to the season. Next up in a fortnight – North Down!!
