Match report Ards 2nds lose ground on promotion challenge

After a run of positive results, Ards Cricket Club Second XI’s push for promotion has faltered in recent weeks following two defeats, firstly to local rivals, North Down and then to Belfast team, BISC.

On both occasions, the effort of the players could not be faulted. Unfortunately, however, due to the unavailability of players for a number of reasons, Ards went into both matches with less than full teams. Certainly, for the match against North Down, the result may well have been different if Ards had been able to field 11 players on the pitch!

Against North Down, Ards batted first and primarily through an exceptional innings from Arafat Khan, Ards posted a very healthy score of 126 in 20 overs. Of this total, Arafat scored a superb 64 in 17 overs through a mix of some big hitting but also through well worked shots as he and those batting with him kept the scoreboard moving at a good pace. Whilst Arafat was the main contributor, the support he received in partnerships with young players like Rory McVeigh, Euan Burrows, Jack Smith and Joel Craig all helped Ards reach what was a competitive total

Ards then got early wickets through the bowling of Arafat and Jack Smith to set North Down back in their run chase. Ards Captain, Jonny Alexander continued to rotate his bowlers well and even without a full team on the field managed to restrict North Down in their attempts to score through imaginative and well placed fields, forcing the batsmen to take risks. Further wickets fell to Joel Craig and (Father and Son), Martin and Euan Burrows to really put the pressure on the opposition. However, two North Down players managed to keep their heads and steer their team towards victory with Dugan and Moreland exploiting the inevitable gaps in the Ards field to score 34 and 39 respectively. It took them, however, to the 19th over before the winning runs were made.

A really excellent effort by this inexperienced Ards team to make this a competitive match, well led by Captain for the day, Jonny Alexander. A case of what might have been had Ards their full team out.

As a footnote to this match, all members of Ards Cricket Club and indeed the cricketing community would wish to extend their best wishes to Arafat Khan for a speedy recovery from a recent accident which has meant time spent in hospital.

The Seconds now sit mid-table and unfortunately out of the running for promotion honours this year. However, in what has been a good competitive season, Ards hope to finish with a flourish in their last match of the season against Cliftonville/Academy at Londonderry Park.
